CASE STUDY #3 Retailer of Lifestyle Brands - File Transfer & Machine Report- Background One of Pulse's most successful clients is part of a billion dollar holding of multi-channel direct-to-consumer retailers, including multiple e-commerce websites for leading home and apparel brands. Their objective is to modernize their production processes and to improve oper- ator performance. The Requirements The company needed a system that would provide them with the production statistics re- quired to improve efficiency and performance of the personalization process. They also needed a system that would allow a single machine operator to manage multiple machines at the same time with increased efficiency and reduced production errors. The Problem The company has offered garment personal- ization for quite some time, but their ageing production processes compounded with op- erator inefficiencies were severely slowing the turnaround of products. The company still used disks to transfer designs to over 20 embroidery machines, which was a slow and inefficient process that often resulted in errors and lost designs. In addition, it also made design management very difficult and space consuming. The company rec- ognized that the machine operator's production levels were below capacity, but they had no way to compile the statistics required to implement changes needed to improve performance. The first goal of the company was to eliminate the use of disks for file transfers to reduce the number of production errors, as well as the time spent fetching designs. They aimed to combine a centralized design database with a barcode scanning system to allow their embroidery machines to automatically load completed designs from a queue of jobs. The second goal was to be able to create detailed reports in order to form the groundwork for a performance based incentive program for embroidery machine operators. This would allow them to see the statistics for specific machines and operators to determine how efficiently embroidery jobs are being completed.
