Success doesn't just happen, rather it's the result of careful planning, proper organization and attention-to-detail. You must focus hard on all the many details that go into operating a business. If you focus on producing great embroidery, but don't have a profitable price strategy, you will lose. If you concentrate on growing your business, but don't pay attention to cash flow, you will lose. A successful entrepreneur must be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. This chapter details ten keys to operating a successful embroidery shop. It was compiled from input provided by a number of successful shops. Though each shop was different in size and focus, they all agreed on the basic ingredients necessary for success. Choose A Reliable Source Of Equipment There are two critical components to an Embroidery business: Sales & Production. One doesn't function without the other. In fact, the embroidery equipment is the core of an embroidery business. If it's unreliable, or unsuitable to produce what you need, then you will be held back. In addition to dependable equipment, it's just as important that the supplier is capable of maintaining the equipment. (For more on selecting machinery and software, refer to Chapter 1.) Here is a list of things that you consider when choosing your equipment dealer: • Quality machines that have a proven track record. • Multi-level embroidery design software with a proven track record. • A Top-notch Training program. • Continuing education programs such as seminars, newsletters and internet chat sessions. • Experienced Service Technicians. • Parts and supplies in stock, ready to ship. www.hsi.us care@hsi.us 66
