business, we also educate potential customers (and the world in general) as to what Embroidery is all about. With a little bit of imagination, you can develop hundreds of avenues for reaching new customers. And it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Some of the best methods are very inexpensive. Building your customer base is really all about promoting who you are and what you do. With that in mind, lets look at some methods of gaining exposure for your Business. 1. Develop A Memorable Name And Logo The first step in developing a customer base is to establish your name. This begins with the creation of your business name. It needs to be memorable so that it sticks out in someone's head. And, believe me, thats half the battle, right there. If they can remember your name, they can find it in the phone book. So pay close attention to what you choose. After developing the name, its time to put together a logo. After all, you are in the logo business, so it stands to reason that you should have one. Don't get bogged down by thinking that yours has to be the most unique creation ever developed. Just go with what works, the simpler the better. If you don't believe this, just look at the Corporate Logo's around you: Nike, McDonalds, Mercedes, Hilton, etc. Simple logo's, like catchy names, are the easiest to store in your brain, and thus they are remembered longer. Now that you have these promotional tools, its time to put them to work. The simplest method for getting your name out is business cards. Carry them with you day and night and be quick to hand them out. This is so effective, because it usually allows you to talk directly with the potential customer while you are putting a card in their hand. Thus, you get that added personal touch that is missing from standard media such as Flyers and Ads. Plus, you have a chance to educate the person on what Embroidery is and how it can benefit them. 2. Wear Embroidered Apparel - Be A Walking Billboard. A picture is worth a thousand words! One of my favorite stories is about a passenger seated next to me on a flight, who knew nothing about the Embroidery Business. I should point out that he was a very athletic, macho, New York City Police Officer. "So what do you do for a living" he asked. I replied "Embroidery". He leaned back away from me, and gave me the most incredulous look, that read, "what kind of guy are you?" I quickly pointed to my shirt (embroidered, of course) and said "we do logo's, like this" Then, it begin to dawn on him what Embroidery was all about. Next, I pointed out the fact that he was wearing a New York Yankees cap, Nike shorts, and a Country Club golf shirt, all of which were embroidered. By then he fully understood what it was that I did, and restored me to full fledged, red-blooded American Guy status in his mind. Furthermore, he wanted to know more about my business, and became a potential customer very quickly. So keep in mind the importance of wearing embroidered apparel in www.hsi.us care@hic.us 110
