Multiple Needles This is a key factor, as it eliminates the need to rethread needles during the sewing process. The more needles the better, as it minimizes how much re- threading you will do between jobs. For example, with a fifteen needle machine, you will always have fifteen different colors of thread ready to sew. There is a good chance that each new design will be able to make use of those fifteen colors. Occasionally, you may have to change out some colors before a new job, but such occurrences tend to be infrequent. Another benefit of multiple needles is redundancy. If a needle, needle drive bar, or pressor foot was to become inoperable, then you would still have fourteen more as a backup (in the case of a 15 needle machine). Though such failures are rare, they can happen, most likely as the result of crashing a needle into a hoop. Automatic Trimmers Commercial machines automatically trim the upper thread and the bobbin thread at key points throughout the design, such as color changes or long jumps. In addition, with commercial digitizing software you can program in thread trims anywhere within a design. This further decreases labor while increasing productivity. Precision Drive System The motors and linkage that drive the sewing needles and the pantograph are heavy-duty and very precise. This ensures that intricate designs sew correctly on almost any fabric or garment. Unfortunately, many of the hobby machines cannot achieve the same quality as the commercial machines. Cap Drivers Sewing on caps is not quite as simple, technologically, as just having the right frame for hooping. Commercial machines actually have a specific drive system for cap sewing, that ensures ease of operation and high quality stitching on what is essentially a curved surface. Large Sewing Fields Its quite simple to switch from sewing small left chest logo's to large full front or jacket-back logo's. Typically, it just involves using a larger hoop. The machine does not need to be reconfigured. The only exception is when changing from a cap setup to a flat setup. Even then, it's usually a task that only takes a couple of minutes at the most. www.hsi.us care@hsi.us 22
